New Applicants On The Rise As Downturn Takes A Grip

For the first time since CBS was formed in 1997 new applications from sub contract staff are out weighing employment opportunities with electrical contractors as the recession begins to take it’s grip.

This will ultimately lead to a reduction and in pay and charge rates as electrical contractors have to cut prices to win work to keep trading, there is still work out there, but not enough to go around. One thing this downturn may do is whittle out a lot of rogue contractors, sub contractors, and employment agencies, who have jumped on the construction boom bandwagon, and won work by not adhering to CIS and NI regulations implemented two years ago, and continuing to pay hourly/daily rate subbies at 18/20%.

The cash strapped Government will be stepping up their campaign against contractors who have ignored Inland Revenue regulations, with Employer NI contributions being the main target. I have attended a number of meetings with accountants with regards to conforming with CIS, and if any of our clients are still unsure of where they stand in an area shrouded in greyness please contact me for more information.

New Project-Ruislip

CBS have commenced a new project with P&D in Ruislip which will go on to the end of January 2009. We have provided a Foreman and three Electricians for the project which is a huge boost, as like everyone CBS have been finding time extremely difficult in the current economic climate, and next year looks set to get worse.

Gemini Court Draws To A Close

Our project in London at Gemini Court for AES is near completion. We have supplied AES with two foremen and several trades staff during this project which is due to be completed on schedule. Downturn Hits The Electrical Industry

For the first time in several years CBS have applicants outnumbering vacancies as the country slides in to recession. It is obvious that rates for labour will move downwards in the coming months as electrical contractors have to fight harder for work, and push for tighter rates from clients. Ultimately work has to carry on and the olympics should give a needed boost to work in and around London, but the big fear is that panic stricken bankers will pull in overdrafts which are the lifeblood of alot of small contractors. However it is our belief that if companies remain loyal to their customers during times of

hardship, most with a strong backbone will not only survive, but come back stronger in the future.
